Tangier is an impressive city in Morocco. It has a rich history, museums, beaches, excellent boutique shops, and restaurants. The locals are also very friendly.

The best thing about the place is the diversity. Regardless of what you and your partner prefer on a day trip, the city has it all.

For those who enjoy a relaxing stroll, open plazas, and sightseeing spots, this destination will have you hooked. But where do you go?

Fortunately, you don’t have to scour the internet to find the top attractions. We curated a list of eleven things to do and places to travel as a couple.

Explore the Medina

Day trips from Tangier aren’t complete without a visit to Medina. If you want the quintessential experience, exploring Medina is a must. No, it isn’t Medina in Saudi Arabia. There’s a place called Medina!

The moment you step foot in this vibrant place, you’ll truly feel the soul it has. It’s colorful and full of rich heritage and culture – a perfect place to explore as a couple. There are colorful houses and bustling markets, and people are very friendly.

It isn’t that big, you won’t get lost. But there’s still a lot to see and explore. The best view is over the port. There are historic cannons laid out in a row. And if the skies are clear, you can also see Spain in the distance. You must explore the Kasbah in Medina. It’s the most beautiful part. There are many boutique shops and museums!

Grand Socco

The Grand Socco is an open plaza at the heart of Medina. It separates the old Medina and the modern establishments. This is one of the popular spots for tourists.

However, it isn’t a tourist trap. It’s a fantastic place. This place is called by many names by the locals, like Souk Ibarra. However, the official name is Place du Grand.

There’s a large market just on the side you can go. There are also towering mosques and a famous old movie theater called the Cinema Rif.

Grand Socco might seem a bit overwhelming at first. But just take in all the sensory experience it has to offer. You’ll love it!

Café Hafa

Café Hafa is a must-see. It’s practically an institution. Honestly, no trip to this city is complete without visiting Café Hafa. It’s one of the most famous old cafés in the world.

The best time to dine in as a couple is during the morning, when it’s a little less crowded. The smaller crowds ensure you’ll be able to take in all the beauty it has to offer.

When you are in Café Hafa, you must order Moroccan tea. It’s a sweet and sugary tea and makes for a perfect start to the day. If you don’t mind large crowds, tour the café in the evenings for a great dinner. It’ll be full of life, people, and delicious food.

Outside Café Havfa, you’ll enjoy seeing the locals playing music, playing cards, and people selling all kinds of goods by the street, including delicious salted peanuts and more.

DID YOU KNOW?
Morocco is the 2nd most visited country in Africa, just after Egypt. With more than 12 million visitors in 2019 alone, it is the 3rd most visited country in the Arab region.

El Morocco Club

If you and your partner are foodies, see El Morocco Club. It serves delicious traditional Moroccan-inspired European food. Apart from the delicious food, you’ll also love the atmosphere.

It’s full of life, and the decorations are true to Moroccan heritage. You’ll also be greeted with exceptionally friendly service. El Morocco Club is one of the best places to dine in as a couple.

Prices are slightly higher at El Morocco Club than they are at other local restaurants. The food is delicious, though. But how often do you get to experience Moroccan-inspired European food anyway? Locals and tourists alike think that the prices are completely worth it.

Visit the Contemporary Art Museum

Tangier is a fantastic place for history buffs. If you and your partner love learning about history, direct to the Contemporary Art and Kasbah museums.

There are two museums right beside each other. This makes it easy to cover them both in a single pass. The two museums are filled with a rich heritage, historical art, firearms, and more.

Start by visiting the Contemporary Art Museum, which has recently opened.  It features pieces that pay tribute to artists in Morocco. Visiting the Kasbah Museum can also allow you to indulge in the area’s history.

Main exhibitions include large replica maps and an exquisite mosaic of Venus. You can pick up a pamphlet or two to help you out if you don’t speak French or Arabic. The museums are large and have a lot to offer (seven floors)! There’s also the Ibn Battuta Museum.

If you step into only one museum, it must be this one. The museum gives you loads of information about the great explorer Muhammad ibn Battutah.

Visit the Phonecian Tombs

You can also tour the Phonecian Tombs. Don’t worry, though, they’re not as morbid as they sound. If you want to see jaw-dropping views with your partner, this is the place to go.

It’s a popular spot for the locals. There are cliffs, with really nice views of the harbor and city. The Phonecian Tombs are in between Café Hafa and Medina.

If you’re already in Medina or the Cafa, it won’t be too much of a detour to witness the tombs, either. Tangier and Morocco have a lot of history. The Phonecian Tombs are a perfect place to start experiencing it.

Cape Spartel

You can’t miss Cape Spartel when visiting this city. It’s one of the most beautiful natural parks you’ll see. This also makes it the perfect spot for couples to take a stroll.

There’s also a small café and a lighthouse. The tiny café boasts a lot of character, though, a feature you’ll notice with many locations. The city just has a lot of character in general.

Cape Spartel is best explored during the day. It’s a location you won’t forget.

Visit the Beaches

Is any romantic trip complete without a fun time to the beach? We think not. Fortunately, the place has beautiful and pristine beaches. You’ll find sand and surge both in the city and suburbs. That way, wherever you find yourselves, you can always add a trip to the beach to your travel itinerary.

The beaches in the city are more crowded. You can access all the main areas of the city beach from the main cornice. A popular location is Merkala Beach, which is only ten minutes west of the port.

Tangier has other beaches, too, like Achakar Beach. However, be vigilant and watchful during your travels. When you’re soaking up the sun, be mindful of your belongings. Always keep your bags, wallets, and other valuables nearby.

There have been reports of items getting stolen, but this is commonplace on beaches around the world, No one wants to lose their things during a romantic getaway.

Hercules Cave

The Hercules Cave is the perfect spot if you want a thrilling adventure. This cave has both man-made and natural formations. It is breathtaking nonetheless!

It’s quite large and has an eerie feel during the time you’re exploring. We recommend visiting the cave early in the day.  Since it’s an extremely popular tourist attraction, it’s almost always crowded.

Saint Andrew’s Church

Saint Andrew’s Church is open from 10 AM to 1 PM and 2:30 PM to 5 PM. It’s open throughout the week except for Fridays. It’s a great place for a stroll.

There are large trees for shade. So you’ll have plenty of time to relax and cool down. The custodians and groundskeeper are very polite and welcoming. They’re also very knowledgeable. Feel free to talk about the history and the paintings there.

The church area is calm and serene. The best part is it isn’t that far from Grand Socco. It’s only a three-minute walk from Grand Socco.

Soak in the Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is definitely not where you expect it to be. It’s a two and half hour drive from Tangier, but it’s well worth it. The city is called the Blue City. This place is, hands down, one of the best places to take pictures.

Chefchaouen is perfect for couples! The scenery and the vibrant colors used in the architecture are nothing short of mesmerizing. The locals are very friendly too. There are a lot of things to do here, so feel free to shop, eat at local restaurants, and more.

If you’d like to see more landmarks in Chefchaouen, you should also check out the Spanish Mosque.

Best Places to Stay in Tangier

Tangier has so much to offer. You can spend the whole day exploring and still not get to see everything. However, you’ll still need a place to sleep at night. Thankfully, it has tons of accommodation options for couples.

Medina offers the best options. It’s right at the heart of most of the major local attractions. Staying in Medina guarantees that you won’t have to walk too far to see the sights.

The best couple’s stay is Dar Nour. It’s a bed and breakfast made especially for couples! The mid-range prices are affordable, and the service is fantastic. The rooms are completely and lavishly furnished with ensuite bathrooms too!

For a luxurious and truly memorable stay, check into Riad Dar Saba. It’s one of the most luxurious accommodations. You get awesome ocean views, a stunning rooftop terrace, and excellent food and drink options.

A couple on a budget will love Bayt Alice Hostel! Don’t let it being a budget accommodation fool you, though. This place is incredible. The rooms are very homey and, as is with the theme – full of character.

Although Bayt Alice Hostel will give you a more communal experience, depending on what you’re looking for, it might not be the best for couples. Another place you can check out is the Kasbah Rose.
