After writing so many articles on temples, my curiosity took me to one of the most popular and beautiful Gurudwara nestled in the heart of Delhi — Bangla Sahib. 

Delhi is home to many religious and historical sites, like the Akshardham Temple or the Jhandewala Devi Mandir. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is not just a place of worship for Sikhs but a flourishing definition of India’s rich and diverse history.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most important Sikh worshiping places and is prominently known for the holy pond inside the premises called “Sarovar”. 

The Gurudwara was built on a small shrine in a bungalow donated by King Raja Jai Singh of Amer, who also supervised the construction of the nine Sikh shrines.

The Gurudwara and its Sarovar, located in the heart of Delhi, are now a place of great significance in Sikhism. The grounds of this holy place include the Gurudwara, a kitchen, a large holy pond, a school, a hospital, and an art gallery.

Some dishes normally cooked in Langar include dal, roti, kadhi chawal, aloo gobi, chole, etc. 

Kadha Prashad is also prepared with the langar, it’s a dessert prepared with flour, ghee, and sugar, and is served as Prashad in the temple.

Since Bangla Sahib is a religious place and is connected to people’s sentiments, they have a set of rules just like any other temple, and it’s important to follow them while at the Gurudwara.

1. One of the most significant rules while visiting a Gurudwara is to cover your head. If you have nothing to cover your head with, you’ll see small pieces of clothing outside the main hall in every Gurudwara. They are free to use so you can cover your heads. 

2. The devotees are expected to take off their shoes outside before stepping into the temple. This is one of the most significant rules when it comes to temples and mosques. 

3. Wash your hands and feet before entering the Gurudwara. When I first visited the Gurudwara I ended up looking all around for water to wash. But what I liked most about the setup is that there will be a small space with water right at the entrance where you can wash your feet without any hassle. 

4. Pay attention to your attire. Visitors should wear something modest to cover their legs and shoulders. 

5. Maintain silence and respect inside the prayer hall and do not engage yourself in any disruptive behavior. 

6. Photography is generally allowed in the outer areas of the Gurdwara complex, but visitors should respect any instructions regarding photography restrictions, especially inside the prayer hall. Before taking a photo, look out for any signs around you to see if it is permitted or not.

7. Smoking, alcohol consumption, and eating non-vegetarian food are strictly prohibited inside the complex. 

8. Refrain from using your phone or any other electronic device inside the main hall. 

9. Security checks may be conducted at the entrance for the safety and security of all visitors. Cooperation with security personnel is appreciated.

10. Show respect towards the Guru Granth Sahib (holy scripture) and other religious artifacts within the gurdwara. Avoid pointing feet towards the Guru Granth Sahib or sitting with feet extended towards it.
