According to the Ministry of Tourism’s India Tourism Data Compendium 2025, Indian nationals made 30.89 million trips abroad in 2024, and about 71% of those departures went to just ten countries. These countries include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. The Eastern Caribbean lies outside that list, and a part of travellers who have already done Dubai, Bangkok, and Singapore.
St Kitts and Nevis and St Lucia make a natural pair to compare for a first trip to the region. Both take a full day of travel from Mumbai or Delhi, both are English-speaking, and travellers can visit the Caribbean overwater bungalows and vacation resorts.

Getting There From India
No airline flies direct from India to the Caribbean, so every itinerary includes at least two connections. Three routings cover most trips.
The Gulf route is the one many Indian travellers already consider. Emirates and Qatar Airways link Indian cities with US gateways such as New York and Miami, where flights to both islands depart.
The European route flies through London. British Airways flies from Gatwick to St Lucia, and to St Kitts with a stop in Antigua on the way. Most flights from India land at Heathrow, so switching to Gatwick means passing through UK immigration, and that requires a UK visa.
The US route has the widest choice of flights, with US carriers serving both islands from hubs including Miami and New York. US airports have no international transit area, so Indian passport holders require a valid US visa even for a two-hour connection.
On St Lucia, long-haul flights land at Hewanorra in the far south. Most stays in Rodney Bay, and Castries are more than an hour away by road, which is worth building into the arrival day.
Entry Rules for Indian Passports
St Kitts and Nevis became the first CARICOM country to need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, from 26 May 2025. Every visitor needs an approved eTA before departure, applied for through the St Kitts and Nevis e-Border app or knatravelform.kn. The general charge is US$17, and the authorisation is valid for 90 days, according to the government’s official announcement.
St Lucia provides Indian nationals a visa on arrival, with a maximum stay of six weeks. Entry rules change, so both should be checked with the airline and the official immigration websites a few weeks before flying. In practice, the UK or US transit visa takes far longer to manage than either island’s paperwork.
Beaches and Hikes
St Kitts packs a lot into a compact space. The south-east peninsula has calm swimming at Cockleshell Bay and South Friars Bay. Hikers head north to Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano climbed with a guide through rainforest to the crater rim. Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, deserves a whole day, and a narrow-gauge railway built for the sugar harvest now takes visitors along the coast. A short ferry ride leads to Nevis and the long sand of Pinney’s Beach.
St Lucia is bigger and steeper. The Pitons, two volcanic spires near Soufrière, cover the south-west coast, and Gros Piton is the one visitors can climb with a local guide, a steep half-day hike. Close by, the Sulphur Springs are promoted as a drive-in volcano, with mud baths at the bottom. Anse Chastanet has brilliant snorkelling straight off the beach, and Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay is the easy choice for families.
What to Eat
Kittitian cooking centers on the national dish: stewed saltfish with spicy plantain, coconut dumplings and seasoned breadfruit. Goat water, a thick spiced stew, is the other local staple worth tasting.
St Lucia’s national dish is green fig and saltfish, made with unripe bananas. Indian indentured workers arrived on the island in the 19th century, and their influence survives in the roti sold at roadside snackettes, often filled with curried channa or potato. That makes St Lucia the preferred island for vegetarian travellers. On Friday nights, Gros Islet closes its streets for grilled fish, rum punch and music.
Budget
Flights are the biggest expense, and fares from India climb sharply around Christmas and Easter. Both islands use the Eastern Caribbean dollar, pegged at 2.70 to the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted, so a USD forex card covers most resources.
St Lucia has a wider range of places to stay, from guesthouses near Rodney Bay to the all-inclusive resorts it is known for. St Kitts has fewer rooms and a thinner budget segment, while Nevis leans towards general plantation inns at higher prices. Taxis on both islands work on set rates instead of meters, so it helps to confirm the fare before getting in.
Best Months to Go
The dry season runs from mid-December to April, with steady sunshine and the highest costs. May and early June are quieter and cheaper. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November, peaking between August and October, so travel insurance with weather cover matters in those months. Occasions can also decide the dates. St Lucia’s Carnival fills July, and St Kitts celebrates Sugar Mas over Christmas and New Year.
Why Both Islands Come Up in Second-Passport Conversations
Travellers who research either island soon find both names in articles about second citizenship. Each runs a citizenship-by-investment programme, and St Kitts and Nevis, which began in 1984, has the oldest one in the world. St Lucia followed in 2015. For Indian families, the draw is mostly travel access, since both passports give visa-free, on-arrival or online-authorisation entry to over 140 countries. India does not allow dual citizenship, so taking a second passport means giving up the Indian one, usually in exchange for an OCI card.

What Comes Next for Indian Travellers
Indian departures grew by 10.79% in 2024, and if that pace holds, more travellers will look past the identical top ten. Paperwork across the region is moving online, with St Kitts the first CARICOM country to adopt an eTA, so the official portals are a better guide than an old forum thread. For a first Caribbean trip, St Lucia provides more variety and easier vegetarian food. St Kitts and Nevis suits travellers who want two quiet islands, a volcano hike, and a compact list of sights.
